“Ballad of Big Nothing” (Elliott Smith) – Cymbals Eat Guitars
I’m not sure if I ever thought of someone else covering Elliott Smith besides my favorite Between the Bars cover, but Cymbals Eat Guitars did this pretty well. They bring their own vocal styles over music that is obviously a modern rock band yet still screams classic signature Elliott, in a strong yet subtle way- a nice tribute to one of the most incredible “Indie Icons”.
CSS covers Grizzly Bear’s “Knife”
Never could pass up the chance to post some CSS tunes. They are a personal favorite of mine, and this well-executed cover of another awesome band (Grizzly Bear) is just simply great.

The Afghan Whigs cover TLC’s ‘Creep’
Anyone who covers TLC, and a CrazySexyCool track at that, gets some pretty big bonus points for doing it well and not making it sound cheesy. The Afghan Whigs pull it off effortlessly.
The fairly underground indie band is playing a sold out Austin City Limits Show this well, but plays Antone’s the following night. They also managed to sell out LA’s Fonda Theater, adding another show there as well.
